How does this speed test work?
- Ping (Packet internet groper) is a very useful network tool that is mostly used to check if a remote host is online and 'alive'. This ping tool can test the reachability of a host and show details about packets transmitted, received and lost during the ping request.
- For ping test are used ms units (1000 milliseconds = 1 second). Usual values for optics of cable connection is 5-20ms. Wireless (2.4Ghz, 5Ghz.) close to 30ms. Mobile connection is much worse 100ms. Ping value affects most gaming over internet and internet telephony (skype). Less is better, reasonable value is lower than 50ms.
- The Online Ping tool uses the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), which is an integral part of the Internet Protocol (IP). As such, any functioning host on the internet should respond to the pings sent by the tool.
PING (or LATENCY) - the network delays in milliseconds ms when the data is sent between your computer and the Internet. This is the most important parameter when we are talking about online games or calls. Latency time strongly depends on distance between you and the reference server. The longer distance, the bigger latency value is expected.
This speed test uses WebSocket technology for accurate measuring your real Internet connection speed. The best server is automatically selected when you start the test. The following parameters are measured when the test is run:
PING (or LATENCY) - the network delays in milliseconds [ms] when the data is sent between your computer and the Internet. This is the most important parameter when we are talking about online games or calls. Latency time strongly depends on distance between you and the reference server. The longer distance, the bigger latency value is expected. Typical ping values in domestic networks should not exceed 50 ms. But for example at the distance between United States and Europe the ping value may be between 100 and 150 ms.
DOWNLOAD - the data getting speed from the Internet measured as amount of data divided by the time of data sending and shown in Mega Bytes per second (Mb/s, Mbps). The download speed depends is measured using TCP (WebSocket) procol so it depends on network latency. In other words, if the ping value is biger the connection will reach its maximum throughput in a longer time.
UPLOAD - the data sending speed to the Internet measured in the same way as in case of download and shown also in Mb/s.

ping
test is used to determine the connectivity and latency of Internet connected hosts. The online Ping Test uses the nping
tool from the Nmap project.TTL in the Ping Response
Here is a bit of useful information that you can impress your friends with... In a Ping response, there is a TTL or Time to Live value. These come from the system that you are sending your ICMP request packets to and can be used to perform a limited operating system detection check.
The starting TTL varies depending on the operating system. Generally, Linux, Windows, and Cisco routers have differing values. Of course, there are many other possible values and devices, however, this can be a quick way to determine what the device is that is responding to your Ping request. This can mean that gateway or NAT devices, such as firewalls and routers, may be the one responding to the Ping.

For example; you could ping
a Microsoft IIS web server, however, if there is a firewall or load balancer in front of it with a *nix based operating system you will receive a TTL of 64 rather than the expected 128. Your actual result will be lower than the listed value as the TTL will decrement on each hop along the path.
Common Operating System TTL
- 64 Linux or *nix based operating system
- 128 Microsoft Windows (from Windows XP onwards)
- 254 Cisco Network Router
About the Test Ping Tool
Ping is a network troubleshooting tool that displays the response time between two Internet (or IP) addresses. Ping tools are installed by default in most operating systems. It does not matter if you are using Solaris, Windows, FreeBSD or Ubuntu Linux; ping is ubiquitous. A ping uses a type of packet known as ICMP
, commonly known as ICMP request and ICMP reply.
No response from Ping
Firewalls and routers can be configured to block ICMP request and response so you will sometimes find a system does not respond to ping even though the system is up and running. Network Firewalls, such as commercial Cisco and Checkpoint products can do this as can local firewalls such as your local Windows Firewall or a local Linux firewall using IP Tables.
What methods are used to determine the response?
Ubuntu Linux ToolThe default ping tool that comes with Ubuntu Linux is used, and the results are parsed and displayed in the table.
Number of ICMP Packets
Five packets are sent from our server in Newark (USA). Our system will then determine how long it takes to get a response from your selected Target IP address.
Is this dangerous?
Ping is a very common tool that is used everywhere, there is nothing dangerous about an ICMP packet. You are free to ping different systems to determine if they are running and how far away they are from our system. It is possible to use ICMP for a denial of service attack however, this requires sending many more packets than the 5 the tool here does.
Ping API
Need even faster access to the online Ping tool than the form above? The API is simple to use and aims to be a quick reference tool; like all our IP Tools there is a limit of 50 queries per day or you can increase the daily quota with a Membership.
It is pretty straight forward. Use a web client of some kind such as curl, firefox, python or php and hit that address. You will see the Ping results as a simple text response to your HTTP query. Of course, change the 8.8.8.8 that is the Google public DNS server to an IP or hostname of your choosing.
