Users still hanging on to older Macs no longer have to pay $20 for their Mac OS X download thanks to new Apple support documents.

Apple stopped charging for Mac OS X with the release of version 10.9 Mavericks, but users looking for older versions had to pay for the download codes via the Mac App Store. Both Mac OS X Lion and Mac OS X Mountain Lion are still available for purchase for $19.99 each.

Java 7 and later versions are not supported by these older versions of Mac OS X. If you have problems with Java 6, contact Apple Technical Support. Java.com does not provide a download for these systems. Mac OS X Version 10.7.3 (Lion) or newer. Java 7 and later versions can run on your Mac. Oracle Java (Version 7 and later versions) requires an. Microsoft has been working with Apple from the early days of MacOS 10.7 (Lion). Through this partnership, many issues were addressed leading up to the Lion release. Microsoft will continue to work closely with Apple to address problems that may occur with Office for Mac 2008 and 2011 and Lion OS.

In new support documents discovered byMacworld, Apple will allow users to access the download codes for these old operating systems for free.

Those who are feeling nostalgic can download the installers and run the old operating systems on compatible hardware on a partition, or on modern machines in a virtual machine.
